Noticing what moves beneath the surface

Who We Are
OutInSingapore is an independent editorial project based in Singapore. It is written by a small team of writers who bring different perspectives to life in the Lion City.
Our content explores issues like how people approach work and how they reach their goals, the ways in which social and personal identity are affected by living in a structured, often planning-oriented city, how daily routines and spaces are affected and how these, in turn, can affect the larger patterns that shape lives in Singapore.
We at OutInSingapore aim to give the modern developments in Singapore the slower, more detailed observation they have yet to receive. Our writings seek to bring out the details of human experience as clearly and specifically as possible, against the backdrop of a modern, efficient, and ever-changing society.
What We Notice
Writing between the lines moves between the intimate details of individual lives and the wider perspective of how they connect to the broader social and cultural structures.

Our Way of Looking

We observe first. We pay attention to what people actually say and do, the microfrictions that creep into official narratives and real life, and the eventual development of patterns that can be intuited through prolonged, detailed study of everyday life.
Most pieces start from a single observation, an overheard conversation, or a change in a familiar street and daily routines. Others take a step back to explore broader forces: economic change, cultural traditions, and the shifting demographics of the city.

We are devoted to clarity over noise, to the lived texture of reality rather than an abstracted-out version of it, and to the always messy, always human realities that fall outside of easy categorisation. Here, we engage in a slower, more patient process, willing to register both the documented strengths of a city and the improvisations, stresses, and quiet solidarity that are always at work as well.
The Voices

Why This Space Exists
Singapore is already overflowing with very practical information, very sharp comments, and official history. What is lacking is sustained attention to the shifting textures of everyday life and how they unfold.
OutInSingapore exists because we wanted to create an independent project rooted in the city, allowing us to observe and engage more slowly and thoughtfully with the space around us.
These pages are an observation of and focus on the familiar in Singapore.
